Thongs…for Your Books!

Are you in a book group?  I’ve been in various groups, wherever we’ve been stationed, for about fifteen years, and this Beaded Book Thong is my go-to gift for my group members. The cord lies inside your book, with the beaded ends dangling. It’s festive!

A friend gave me one many, many years ago, and they’re such a fun bookmark. Plus, it makes your husband smile if you say. “I can’t find my thong!” when it’s time to stop reading and go to sleep. Well, he might smirk a little, at least.

You’ll need some waxed cording, glass and silver beads to string on it, and charms to tie on either end. That’s it. Really.

Cut the cording to 15” lengths.  Tit a knot 3” from either end, leaving 9” from knot to knot to go in the center of the book. That’s the size of an average hardcover.

String a few beads on one end, tie a knot, then tie on a charm.  Cut off any excess cord, and put a drop of Super Glue on the knot. Repeat with the other end, and you’re done!

I put mine in a little jewelry box and include one of my favorite book quotes…I go back and forth between these two:

Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend.  Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.  ~Attributed to Groucho Marx

When I get a little money, I buy books, and if any is left, I buy food and clothes.  -Erasmus

And guess what?  I even have a download of chalkboard style labels with the Groucho Marx quote.

The label measures about 2″ x 3-1/2″, which is the size of the tins I put my book thongs in this year. Click here to download a sheet of six.

Happy beading, and reading!

Love this! Being in a book club with you… a few years back…. was the highlight of my Ft. Lewis adventure. I will make these for my Maryland friends and share your site with them!

As a fellow book lover, I’m always in need of another bookmark. May have to wander down the road to that bead store you love… I’ve never tried my hand at beading, but this looks like an easy way to begin. (And your comments about the hubs and “missing thong” made me laugh out loud.)

These are beautiful. Anne told me I’d get a chuckle when I read your post. Hehehe…… 🙂 I made some a few years back for the gals I work with and they loved them.

I love reading your comments, and I'll very likely reply!
